My Dear Readers,
In the dimly lit corner of my room, where the soft glow of the lamp barely reached, I found solace in the rhythm of my pen against paper. It was here, in these quiet moments, that the My Dear Majesty poetry series was born.
It all started with My Dear Queen, a tribute to my sister and her arduous journey with her hair. As she poured her heart out to me, recounting the trials and triumphs of being a black woman embracing her hair, I knew her story was not hers alone. It was a narrative shared by countless others, silently navigating the complexities of self-love in a world that often fails to understand.
With each stroke of my pen, I sought to weave together words of empowerment and validation. I wanted every black and brown girl to know that their hair was more than what society sells them—it was a symbol of resilience, beauty, and heritage. My Dear Queen became a love letter to all those who had ever felt marginalized or misunderstood because of the texture of their hair.
But my journey didn't end there. Inspired by the profound impact of My Dear Queen, I turned my attention to another cherished individual in my life—my son. With My Dear King, I aimed to instill within him a sense of self-worth and responsibility. It was my way of leaving behind a legacy, a roadmap for him to navigate the complexities of masculinity with grace and integrity.
My Dear King is more than just a collection of verses; it's a call to action, a conversation starter for young boys and men alike. Through its pages, I hope to spark dialogue about what it truly means to embody strength, compassion, and authenticity in a world that often imposes rigid expectations.
As I sit here, reflecting on the journey that led me to this moment, I am filled with gratitude. Gratitude for the stories that inspired me, for the voices that continue to resonate within these pages, and for the opportunity to make a difference—one poem at a time.
